This breed was developed to lure (or “toll”, hence the name) wild ducks into the shooter’s line of sight.
By playing and frolicking near the water, their activity piques the curiosity of waterfowl. When the ducks approach to investigate, the hunters get ready, and after the shots, the Toller retrieves them.
Here are some characteristics and information about the breed:
Appearance:
The Toller is a medium-sized dog with a medium-length coat that can come in various shades of red or orange. They have an alert expression and eyes that can range from amber to green.
Temperament:
They are known to be intelligent, alert, and energetic. They are friendly dogs but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. With their family, they are extremely loyal and loving.
Activity:
Being working dogs, Tollers have a lot of energy and require ample exercise. They love to play and will excel in canine sports such as agility, search and rescue, and of course, retrieving objects, especially in the water.
Health:
Like many breeds, Tollers can be predisposed to certain health conditions, including hip dysplasia and eye problems. It’s crucial to choose a responsible breeder who conducts necessary health tests on their dogs.
Training:
Their intelligence means they learn quickly, but they can also become bored easily. Training should be varied and positive.
Coat:
The Toller’s coat is water-resistant and requires regular brushing to keep it healthy and tangle-free.
